You are invited to a planning meeting at 11.00am to exchange ideas on future activities and garden visits. After our exchange of ideas, I suggest an exchange of plants or seeds for autumn planting. Bring your own picnic and we will provide hot and cold drinks. Don’t forget to bring your plants to exchange with other members. Members who cannot be present can also send their proposals by e-mail.

A visit to the gardens of La Citadelle and La Louve
Une visite aux jardins de La Citadelle et La Louve

A trip to the Luberon to visit the Jardin Botanique du Domaine viticole de la Citadelle in Ménerbes, and the Jardin Remarquable of La Louve in Bonnieux.
La Citadelle sits in a green setting extending over 5 hectares, with magnificent views. We will walk for around 1h30, accompanied by the gardener, to discover aromatic plants, edible wild medicinal plants and ‘la truffière’.
In the afternoon we will drive to Bonnieux to visit La Louve, a privately owned garden commenced in 1986 by Nicole de Vésian, a designer at Hermès, who continued to work on the garden until she sold it in 1996. Having had several owners since then, the garden has had some additions, but the original design remains and is famous for its sculptural clipped Mediterranean plants and trees, stone pathways and benches, and views of the surrounding landscape. We will be given a guided tour by the property’s head gardener.

Located in the heart of the Belle Isle estate, opposite the historic centre of the city of Agde, Le Château Laurens and its garden are a wonderful green setting on the banks of the river Hérault. Listed as a historic monument in 1996, the garden has now regained its historic landscape structure after a major restoration. Le Château Laurens is a remarkable example of the eclectic architecture of the end of the 19th century: a succession of Art Nouveau, orientalist, Egyptian and symbolist sequences.
After a one hour guided visit, we can picnic (bring your own) in the Belle Isle park. Our visit will end there, but for those who wish to continue their day, the Saint-Etienne cathedral and the historic centre of Agde are worth visiting.

In the morning, we will visit the estate of Adrien Strutynski, a professional citrus grower in Vallauris. He will introduce us to his estate, present different varieties of citrus, share the history of his plantation and his future plans and reveal his secrets for cultivating and maintaining healthy citrus trees.
Next, about a five-minute drive away, we will visit the magnificent garden of Annie Zanini in Golfe-Juan. Annie has an exceptional garden with a wide variety of plants and trees adapted to the mild climate of Golfe Juan, as well as plants suited to colder, inland regions. Before starting the afternoon visit, we can picnic in her ‘atelier’, which is equipped with tables and chairs.

A one-week tour in south-west Turkey exploring habitats from the coast to the higher slopes, which still harbour stunning old growth cedar forests. There will be visits to Simena, Phaselis and Termessos, for the wild flora as well as for their history. Participants should see many species of colchicum, crocus and cyclamen and sternbergia. The leader will be Başak Gardner.
After the botanical tour there is an optional cultural extension from 27 – 30 October.

Razvan Chisu, a horticulturist originally from Transylvania, has explored Spain extensively. He will give an illustrated presentation online about the diversity of plants there, featuring a good number of alpines, bulbs, orchids and shrubs. Members will be able to ask questions after the talk which will not be recorded. Book on the MPG booking page before 15.00 on Monday 11 November.

The unique flora of the Western and Northern Cape

This tour will start and finish in Cape Town and will focus on the biodiversity of the unique fynbos vegetation and diversity of geophytes. Participants will see familiar garden plants growing in their natural habitat as well as many that are quite new. The Cape floristic region is home to the greatest non-tropical concentration of higher plant species in the world, with 9,000 species crammed into its small area. More than 6,200 (69 percent) of these are found nowhere else in the world.
The tour will be led by experienced guide, Frank Gaude. An optional extension from 27 – 31 August will provide an opportunity to see the sights of Cape Town and its surrounds. For more details, and to book, visit the MPG website.
