A warm sunny April morning found a select group of MGF members making (for some) a return visit to Château Pérouse on the Costières plateau for an update on this amazing botanical garden project. The history of this undertaking and the facts and figures have been reported previously (May 2021 and see the website of Château Pérouse), so this is just a brief overview of what we found on this visit.

Par une chaude matinée ensoleillée d’avril, un groupe de membres de la MGF ont rendu visite (à nouveau pour certains) au Château Pérouse, sur le plateau des Costières, pour faire le point sur cet étonnant projet de jardin botanique. L’histoire de cette entreprise et les faits et chiffres ont déjà été rapportés (mai 2021 et voir le site web du Château Pérouse), il ne s’agit donc que d’un bref aperçu de ce que nous avons observé lors de cette visite.

Starting with the geophytes, grown neatly in closely stacked rows of large square pots, Johan Willm presented the stunning collection of plants moving from Lachenalia, Babiana, Romulea, and Moraea originating mainly in the Western Cape of South Africa, to the more familiar tulips and alliums, from the Mediterranean region.

En commençant par les géophytes, cultivées dans  des rangs serrés de grands pots carrés, Johan  Willem nous a présenté une étonnante collection allant des Lachenalia, Babiana, Romulea, et Moraea originaires principalement de la province du  Cap-Occidental d’Afrique du Sud, aux tulipes et alliums plus familiers, provenant de la région méditerranéenne.

With Jan Willem Vos, we then visited the polytunnels. Château Pérouse holds important collections (Collections Agrées CCVS) of Melaleuca and Podocarpus, and National Collections (Collections Nationales CCVS) of Acacia and Eucalyptus all grown from seed in the nursery, there are also polytunnels full of succulents, again growing from seed. All are eventually destined to be planted in the botanical garden.

Avec Jan Willem Vos, nous avons ensuite visité les polytunnels. Le Château Pérouse possède d’importantes collections (Collections Agrées CCVS) de Melaleuca et Podocarpus, et des Collections Nationales CCVS d’Acacia et Eucalyptus, toutes cultivées dans la pépinière à partir de graines. Il y a aussi des polytunnels remplis de plantes succulentes, également cultivées à partir de graines. Toutes sont finalement destinées à être éventuellement plantées dans le jardin botanique.

Finally, we strolled through the experimental gardens set up to see how plants adapt to various types of growing conditions, and then through the River Garden, a beautiful area which provides home for wildlife as well as plants.

Enfin, nous nous sommes promenés dans les jardins expérimentaux mis en place pour voir comment les plantes s’adaptent à différents types de conditions de croissance, puis dans le jardin de la rivière, une belle zone qui fournit un abri pour faune et flore.

This was a fascinating and most rewarding morning (and of course followed by a jolly picnic lunch), thank you to Chantal for organising it and of course to Jan Willem Vos, Johan Willem and the team of expert horticulturists for sharing their passion with us.
