I read about kokedama in the Daily Telegraph a few weeks ago. In Japan, a local clay called akadamia, is mixed with water, shaped into a ball, planted with a variety of plants including cyclamen, hyacinths, primroses, bonsai shrubs, boston and asparagus ferns, anthuriums, ivy, echeverias, aeoniums or pines, in fact you can use your imagination….carnivorous plants….and then the clay is covered with moss. Some of you may like to try and make one. I did!

Il y a quelques semaines, j’ai lu un article sur le kokedama dans le Daily Telegraph. Au Japon, une argile locale appelée akadamia, est mélangée à de l’eau, façonnée en boule et plantée avec diverses plantes dont cyclamens, jacinthes, primevères, arbustes bonsai, fougères de boston et asparagus, anthuriums, lierres, echeverias, aeoniums ou pins… en fait, utilisez votre imagination…. plantes carnivores….et enfin, l’argile est recouverte de mousse. Certains d’entre vous aimeraient essayer et en fabriquer. Je l’ai fait!

The recommended clay is akadamia which is aluminium silicate of volcanic origin. Its function is to glue the ball together. It is expensive, if you can find it, and other combinations can be used. I used cat litter mixed with bonsai soil in a 50:50 ratio. Cat litter, so I found out, is variously, Fullers earth (another clay) or diatomaceous soil (a siliceous sedimentary rock).

L’argile recommandée est l’akadamia qui est un silicate d’aluminium d’origine volcanique. Sa fonction est d’agglomérer la boule. Elle est chère, si vous la trouvez et d’autres solutions sont possibles. J’ai utilisé de la litière pour chat, ce qui semble exotique…, mélangée à de la terre à bonsai dans un rapport 50:50. La litière pour chat, comme je l’ai découvert, est diversement de la terre de Fuller (une autre argile) ou de la terre de diatomée (une roche sédimentaire de silice).

Moss can be bought in sheets but not in the wilds of the Haute-Savoie. Fortunately, I can go into the local woods and harvest wild moss, however this could be illegal, so I’m told. I have also tried Pellia an evergreen liverwort. The local pennywort, Umbilicus rupestris, may be a suitable alternative and may be worth trying.

La mousse peut être achetée en plaques mais pas dans la Haute-Savoie profonde. Heureusement, j’ai pu me rendre dans les bois locaux et collecter de la mousse sauvage, mais ceci peut être illégal à ce qu’on m’a dit. J’ai aussi essayé Pellia une mousse hépatique persistante. Le nombril-de-Vénus, Umbilicus rupestris, peut être une alternative convenable et mérite d’être essayé.

The soil-mix is soaked in water, squeezed to remove excess moisture and then formed into a ball. The roots of the chosen plants should be cleaned of soil either by gentle teasing, by washing or a mixture of both. The plants can then be combined with the soil-mix and planted into holes scooped out of the ball of soil-mix. Moss is then wrapped around the ball, sometimes in several layers and then wrapped in string. In Japanese examples the stringing become a work of art as well.

Le mélange de terre est mouillé avec de l’eau puis pressé pour enlever l’humidité en excès puis façonné en boule. Les racines des plantes choisies doivent être délicatement nettoyées de la terre par peignage doux ou lavage ou les deux. Les plantes doivent ensuite être mélangées au mélange de terre préparé et plantées dans les trous creusés dans la boule. La boule est ensuite enveloppée de mousse parfois en plusieurs couches, maintenue par de la ficelle. Dans les exemples japonais, le cordage est devenu en lui-même un art.

Kokedama is an old art. However, it has recently undergone a contemporary revival. Fedor Van der Valk has created “string gardens” using a variety of plants and moves kokedema to another artistic level.
