The Vallon des Auffes is a small traditional fishing village situated in an inlet right in the heart of Marseilles, just 2.5 km south-west of the Vieux-Port.  The Corniche Kennedy goes overhead on a viaduct, while out to sea, the outlines of the Îles de Frioul can be seen. The Vallon shelters some fifty fishermen’s cabins and small fishing boats and gets its name from a grass used in making rope and fishing nets: l’auffe (Stipa tenacissima).   Precipitous rocks overlook the tiny port with houses clinging to the cliffs and perching on the top.

Le Vallon des Auffes est un petit village de pêcheurs traditionnel situé dans une crique en plein cœur de Marseille, à seulement 2,5 km au sud-ouest du Vieux-Port.  La Corniche Kennedy passe au-dessus sur un viaduc, tandis qu’au large, on aperçoit les contours des Îles de Frioul. Le Vallon abrite une cinquantaine de cabanes de pêcheurs et de petits bateaux de pêche et tire son nom d’une herbe utilisée dans la fabrication des cordes et des filets de pêche : l’auffe (Stipa tenacissima).   Des rochers abrupts surplombent le petit port dont les maisons s’accrochent aux falaises et se perchent au sommet.

Vegetation seems to flourish in the sheltered situation of the Vallon.  Just a few dozen metres from the water’s edge there’s an unusual public garden clinging precipitously to the side of a massive cliff.  This is the aptly-named Jardin Rocailleux.  Extremely steep paths lead upwards from the road, zig-zagging across the cliff face to culminate well above the roofs of nearby houses.  Stout shoes and a good head for heights are required.

La végétation semble s’épanouir dans la situation abritée du Vallon.  À quelques dizaines de mètres du bord de l’eau se trouve un jardin public inhabituel, accroché au flanc d’une falaise massive.  Il s’agit du Jardin Rocailleux.  Des sentiers extrêmement raides partent de la route, zigzaguent sur la falaise et culminent bien au-dessus des toits des bâtiments environnants.  Des chaussures solides et un bon sens de l’altitude sont nécessaires. 

Down at the base of the cliff, the vegetation is in shadow and is green and lush: pink and white osteospermums, the ubiquitous red valerian, Coronilla valentina and sweetly-scented broom (Spartium junceum).  At middle-level, the vegetation is still dense: fig trees, olive trees and shrubs of all kinds overhang the narrow paths.  Agaves, cordylines and tree mallow (Malva arborea) crowd together in the restricted space, while the paths are edged by Erigeron karvinskianus and similar self-seeding plants.  And at the top, where the paths don’t go, right in full sunlight are the real survivors:  giant fennel (Ferula communis), bear’s breeches (Acanthus mollis), pink and red valerian and all sorts of wild plants that have invited themselves in.

Au pied de la falaise, la végétation, ombragée, est verte et luxuriante : osteospermums roses et blancs, omniprésence de la valériane rouge, Coronilla valentina et genêts odorants (Spartium junceum).  Au niveau intermédiaire, la végétation est encore dense : figuiers, oliviers et arbustes de toutes sortes surplombent les chemins étroits.  Les agaves, les cordylines et les mauves arborescentes (Malva arborea) s’entassent dans l’espace restreint, tandis que les chemins sont bordés d’Erigeron karvinskianus et d’autres plantes auto-ensemencées.  Et au sommet, là où les chemins ne vont pas, en plein soleil, se trouvent les vrais survivants : le fenouil géant (Ferula communis), l’acanthe à feuilles molles (Acanthus mollis), la valériane rose et rouge et toutes sortes de plantes sauvages qui se sont invitées.

This garden isn’t the only horticultural surprise in the Vallon.  Many of the narrow side-streets shelter impressive displays of plants in containers, while alongside the quay, local inhabitants have created beautiful displays of succulents (which seem to thrive in the microclimate) in a variety of shapes and colours. 

Ce jardin n’est pas la seule surprise horticole du Vallon.  De nombreuses ruelles étroites abritent d’impressionnants étalages de plantes en conteneurs, tandis que le long des quais, les habitants ont créé de magnifiques étalages de plantes grasses (qui semblent prospérer dans le microclimat) de formes et de couleurs variées.
