Our day began with welcome refreshments at Arlette and Alain’s home in Lauris, in the Luberon. We were lucky to have beautiful weather, with no mistral. Arlette and Alain bought the land in order to build a holiday home for their family and, once built, Arlette started on the creation of a garden on the stony, gently sloping land, formerly a vineyard, which surrounded the house. Her aim was to plant native species which would not need maintenance or watering because the family would not be in residence all year round. Influenced for many years by her visits to England, especially to Hidcote garden, Arlette planted evergreen hedges high enough to filter the wind and thus protect the enclosed flower beds.

La journée a commencé chez Arlette et Alain à Lauris dans le Luberon par une collation bien appréciée. Nous avons bénéficié d’un temps chaud et le mistral était absent. Les propriétaires ont acheté ce terrain en vue de faire construire leur maison de vacances pour toute la famille. Une fois la maison terminée, Arlette a créé son jardin tout autour sur une légère pente caillouteuse, ancienne terre à vigne. Son but était de planter des espèces indigènes qui n’ont besoin ni d’entretien ni d’arrosage, car ils n’habitent pas là toute l’année. Influencée depuis de nombreuses années par ses visites en Angleterre et notamment au jardin d’Hidcote, elle a planté des haies de végétaux persistants et assez hautes pour filtrer le vent et protéger ainsi les parterres de plantes.

A number of plant associations worked very well: Nepeta ‘Six Hills Giant’ with a lemon-yellow helianthus, Ceratostigma plumbaginoides with creeping thyme, and Senecio maritimus with Sedum ‘Matrona’. Against the south facade of the house, we admired Rosa ‘Mermaid’ and on the slope a parterre of Oenothera speciosa.

Nous avons apprécié quelques associations comme : Nepeta ‘Six Hills Giant’ + Helianthus jaune citron, Ceratostigma plumbaginoides avec un thym rampant, Senecio maritimus + Sedum ‘Matrona’. Contre la façade sud de la maison, nous avons admiré le rosier ‘Mermaid’ et sur le talus en pente un parterre d’Oenothera speciosa.

Although, due to the summer heat, the flowers were not at their best, we were able to appreciate the natural provençal style of this garden, created in 1990 to be in harmony with its surroundings.

Bien qu’avec la chaleur estivale, les fleurs n’étaient pas toutes au rendez-vous, nous avons admiré ce jardin créé en 1990 pour son style bien provençal et naturel, en osmose avec l’environnement.

A wisteria-covered pergola provided perfect shade for us to enjoy a convivial picnic lunch.

Sous la tonnelle couverte de glycine, le pique-nique s’est déroulé dans une ambiance très conviviale et sympathique.

An hour’s drive took us to Nicky and Martin’s garden in Sarrians. In contrast, this garden was commenced quite recently (2014) and is already very impressive, considering its size (1 hectare). The couple have completely renovated a former carpenter’s workshop and behind the house have created a mini patio groaning under the weight of a multitude of well-labelled plants, Nicky being an avid gardener.

Après une heure de route, nous sommes arrivés au jardin de Nicky et Martin à Sarrians. Celui-ci, par contre, est tout récent (2014) et, malgré tout, très impressionnant de par sa surface (1 hectare). Ils ont entièrement rénové une ancienne menuiserie et installé un mini jardin-patio derrière la maison croulant sous une multitude de plantes bien étiquetées, car Nicky est une passionnée.

In the former car park, they have laid out an area of parkland, bordered by a stream that provides plenty of water to cultivate their collection of shrubs and trees, which includes: Cornus florida, Vitex agnus-castus, Taxodium distichum, Melia azedarach, Rhus typhina, and Ziziphus jujuba.

Dans l’ancien parking, ils ont aménagé un immense parc longé par un petit ruisseau qui leur procure l’eau en abondance afin d’arroser la collection d’arbustes et d’arbres tels que : Cornus florida, Vitex agnus-castus, Taxodium distichum, Melia azedarach, Rhus typhina, Ziziphus jujuba, etc.

We applauded Martin’s talent as a carpenter when we ascended the watchtower he had built, allowing us to admire Mont Ventoux in the distance.

Nous avons pu admirer les talents de Martin, en tant que menuisier, dans la tour construite de ses mains et qui nous a permis d’admirer au loin le mont Ventoux.

Cool drinks were served under one of the huge oak trees, a legacy of previous owners. Despite the youth of this garden, it looks as though it will mature well and it would be interesting to return in a few years to see how it evolves.

Des boissons fraiches nous ont été servies sous l’un des immenses chênes, vestiges des anciens propriétaires. Malgré la jeunesse de ce jardin, il serait intéressant de revenir dans quelques années pour voir son évolution, car il présage d’un bel avenir.
