In the morning we took a guided walk through the vineyards of the Domaine Les Baies Goûts, which has beautiful views of the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Ventoux. The owners are Isabelle and Frédéric Begouaussel. Isabelle, a passionate winemaker, was our guide. 

Le matin, nous avons fait une balade guidée dans les vignobles du Domaine Les Baies Goûts – avec de belles vues sur les Dentelles de Montmirail et le Mont Ventoux. Isabelle et Frédéric Begouaussel en sont les propriétaires. Isabelle, une vigneronne passionnée, était notre guide.

Isabelle said, “The farmer gives form to the landscape as the gardener does to the garden”.  During our walk, we discovered the importance of allowing natural grass to grow between the lines of vines, of using mulch, of manual harvesting. In summary, responsible agriculture with minimal use of chemicals to maintain microfauna, insects and earthworms.

Au cours de notre balade, nous avons découvert l’importance de l’herbe naturelle entre les vignes, de l’utilisation du paillis, de la récolte manuelle. En résumé, l’agriculture consciencieuse avec une utilisation minimale de produits chimiques pour maintenir la microfaune, les insectes et les vers de terre.

We ate our picnic in a shaded area close to the vineyard, whilst Isabelle and Fred prepared a tasting of their wines. A pleasant end to an interesting morning. 

Nous avons fait notre pique-nique dans une zone ombragée près du vignoble et en même temps Isabelle et Fred avaient préparé une dégustation de leurs vins. Une fin agréable d’une matinée intéressante.

Next, we made the short journey to Frances’ garden.

Ensuite, nous avons fait le court trajet jusqu’au jardin de Frances.

When we arrived, she gave us a brief history of the garden and how it has been developing for about 20 years. When the house was bought, there was no garden, and no plants, just a large caravan and three Dobermanns!

A notre arrivée, elle nous a donné un bref historique du jardin et de son évolution depuis une vingtaine d’années.  Au moment de l’achat de la maison, il n’y avait pas de jardin, ni de plantes, seulement une grande caravane et trois Dobermann !

The garden in situated at a height of 290 metres and has the most stunning views of the Dentelles de Montmirail. The ground is stony and the soil predominately clay.

Le jardin est situé à 290 mètres d’altitude et offre une vue imprenable sur les Dentelles de Montmirail.  Le sol est caillouteux et principalement argileux.

Frances explained that her first attempts at planting were difficult. Joining MGF had a big impact on the way she approached gardening. Before joining, she was less aware of the importance of structure and of having a vision for the garden. Although the view is stunning, she explained that it can have its drawbacks. She planted a Provençal cypress at a distance from the house to add interest and focus, but it grew so large that it blocked the view. Now all planting is low to medium height, so the view remains.

Frances a expliqué que ses premières tentatives de plantation ont été difficiles.  Son adhésion à MGF a eu un impact important sur sa façon d’aborder le jardinage.  Avant de rejoindre l’association, elle était moins consciente de l’importance de la structure et de la nécessité d’avoir une vision pour le jardin.  Et la vue, si magnifique soit-elle, peut avoir des inconvénients.  Frances a planté un cyprès provençal à une certaine distance de la maison pour ajouter de l’intérêt et un point de focalisation, mais l’arbre est devenu si grand qu’il a complètement bloqué la vue.  Aujourd’hui, toutes les plantations sont de faible à moyenne hauteur, ce qui permet de conserver la vue.

The idea was to create a dry garden that would survive with very little water, and this has been achieved with great success. In front of the house are a number of beds dressed with gravel, containing a large selection of Mediterranean plants, including many beautiful cistuses. The selection of plants and the use of herbs gives the area a very natural feel.

Le but était de créer un jardin sec qui survivrait avec très peu d’eau, ce qui a été réalisé avec beaucoup de succès.  Devant la maison se trouvent un certain nombre de plates-bandes recouvertes de gravier, contenant une grande sélection de plantes méditerranéennes, dont de magnifiques cistes.  Le choix des plantes et l’utilisation d’herbes aromatiques donnent à la zone un aspect très naturel.

The planting continues up the slope beside the house, leading to another sitting area with wonderful views.

La plantation se poursuit sur la pente à côté de la maison, menant à un coin salon qui offre lui aussi une vue superbe.

The transition between the garden and the natural landscape is beautifully achieved, with the use of wild plants including Spartium junceum (broom), Centranthus ruber,Aphyllanthes monspeliensis, clipped Viburnum tinus, oaks, rosemary and lavender. The garden flows into the landscape with no obvious boundary and sits in perfect harmony with its surroundings.

La transition entre jardin et paysage naturel est magnifiquement réalisée grâce à l’utilisation de plantes sauvages telles que Spartium junceum (genêt), Centranthus ruber, Aphyllanthes monspeliensis, Viburnum tinus taillé, des chênes, du romarin et de la lavande.  Le jardin s’intègre dans le paysage sans démarcation apparente et s’harmonise parfaitement avec son environnement.

Planting has been a challenge as it is difficult to dig holes in the rocky terrain. Frances often uses the ‘Filippi method’ of digging a large hole, filling the bottom with gravel, then watering copiously for the first few weeks after planting. She has learnt over the years, through trial and error, which plants will survive in her dry garden. Although often tempted in Spring by the vibrant herbaceous plants for sale at plant fairs, she knows they will not thrive in her garden. Frances shreds all the garden prunings and makes her own compost and mulch. The mulch is particularly important to stop dehydration of the soil.

Les plantations ont toujours posé problème, car il est difficile de creuser des trous dans le terrain rocailleux.  Frances utilise souvent la “méthode Filippi” qui consiste à creuser un grand trou, à remplir le fond de gravier, puis à arroser copieusement pendant les premières semaines suivant la plantation.  Au fil des ans, elle a appris, par essais et erreurs, quelles plantes survivront dans son jardin sec.  Bien qu’elle soit souvent tentée au printemps par les plantes herbacées éclatantes vendues dans les foires aux plantes, elle sait qu’elles ne s’épanouiront pas chez elle.  Frances broie tous ses résidus de taille et fabrique son propre compost et son propre paillis.  Le paillis est particulièrement important pour empêcher la déshydratation du sol.

The visit finished with much appreciated refreshments and cake on the beautiful terrace.

La visite s’est terminée par des rafraîchissements et des gâteaux très appréciés sur la belle terrasse.
